Unwilling to label her son or give up on him, Dr. Florance began noticing the little ways in which he was desperately trying to transmit his ideas and feelings. A brain scientist and speech pathologist by profession, Dr. Florance was uniquely equipped to interpret oblique signals as she attempted to unravel the mysteries of a brain that seemed to be incorrectly wired. Tackling Whitney's problem from a multi-disciplinary viewpoint, she traced his difficulties to his high level of visual thinking. Able to provide expertise in speech and hearing science and in psychology, she found the key to unlocking both his thoughts and his emotions.
